A growing number of US states and sportsbooks are moving to remove credit cards as a funding option for online betting accounts amid regulators’ intensifying scrutiny of responsible gambling measures.
Ohio is among the latest states considering a ban on credit card deposits for online sportsbooks, with the Ohio Casino Control Commission proposing rule changes that could take effect later this year.
Colorado lawmakers are also reviewing legislation that would prohibit bettors from using credit cards to fund gambling accounts.
At the same time, several major operators have followed the lead of FanDuel and DraftKings, which had already removed credit cards from their sites, and have voluntarily phased out the payment method nationwide.
BetMGM last month confirmed it would stop accepting credit card deposits across all licensed US markets following regulatory discussions with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.
Speaking during a March board meeting with the PGCB, BetMGM chief compliance officer Rhea Loney said: “In the coming days, as of March 31, we will no longer be allowing credit cards, new credit cards to be added to the accounts for individuals, and it is a phasing out of credit card usage on the BetMGM platforms.”
Caesars Entertainment has also followed suit, ending credit card deposits across its US online sportsbook, casino, and poker platforms. The change took effect in April and leaves only a handful of major operators still accepting the payment method in some jurisdictions.
